Day 99: With this PJ winding down, what's on my mind: Fair Use, Orphan Works (of course) and a future planned book on 'Confidential Informants' or their prison names, Rats.
Day 99: With this PJ winding down, what's on my mind: Fair Use, Orphan Works (of course) and a future planned book on 'Confidential Informants' or their prison names, Rats.

Journal Entry:

"Awake at 6:30, up around 7 am, slow process this AM. Lot on my mind, trying to filter it all thru. I wonder what will happen today? In the brisk common room, working on this J, a little on Null, maybe Blood; should go back to case work too though. Take Babes through the Fair Use paces, Lessig email and OW thesis for lack of a better word.

Book title Idea: 'Honor Among Snitches' — the title tells the story, OR 'From complications of being a RAT'.

Wrote mostly on Null. Got to reach nexus so I can start Blood Sun.

LUNCH: Hamburgers (2), Roll, big ass potato fry wedges, bread pudding. Burgers in reserve.

Took a few naps, didn't do much, really. Finished 'The Imaginary Girlfriend', started 'The Terminal Man' by Crichton. I don't think I've read it before, might have started and not finished.

SUPPER: Cheese Pizza (better than usual, ate most of it), green beans and salad (ate all).

The computer room was open for everything but email, allegedly. I didn't check it out, and they closed it by 6. Slowly... slowly... get ready.

Received a little good news, the MDOL reversed their decision on unemployment. I really didn't need that hassle while in here or deal with it when I get out. Last day of journal tomorrow — Day 100 & end of Sept. Yay! New journal, do I send this home or start copying then again? Think about it.

Looks like dog day in the AM. Yippee."

Notes for Day 99 (Four Years Later)

  • The Politics of the "Rat": The book title ideas (Honor Among Snitches or From Complications of Being a RAT) came from observing the complex reality of prison politics and those who cooperate with law enforcement. It’s a multilayered issue that movies often get wrong, and I was careful not to put the sensitive details in my journal where they could be seized at any time. I still plan to write this story someday.

  • Vindication with MDOL: Before surrendering, I had been receiving pandemic unemployment. The Maine Department of Labor initially tried to claim it was fraudulent and said if I just paid it back, it would be fine. I refused to roll over because I did everything legitimately and had the paperwork to prove it. After I sent my proof, they finally admitted, "Our bad"—a rare and welcome win while being incarcerated.

  • The Law Library Grind: Even with the 100-day milestone approaching, I was still deep in the "Fair Use paces" and refining my "OW (Orphan Works) thesis". I was effectively acting as my own researcher, preparing the foundation for the outreach to Professor Lessig.

  • The Transition: Day 99 was the eve of finishing the second journal and hitting the 100-day mark. I was already debating whether to send the completed journal home or keep it to copy entries—a common prison dilemma of wanting to preserve your history while keeping it out of the hands of the BOP.
