Day 98 Pretty standard prison day, my biggest gripe four years later is that I can't find a drawing of the 'Citadel', the major setting for the Null series.

Journal Entry: Day 98 - 9/28/21 - TUES

"Up about 6:30, exercised, H/L drink, in the slightly cleaned up area common area going to work on Null/J, maybe start 'Blood on the Sun.' I lost the bet of when and what we would get back, however, since we didn't name the wager, the 'stakes,' that kind of nullifies the bet. A.K. said now is when we come up with the stakes, he's got a little to learn about gambling.

Currently reading 'The Imaginary Girlfriend' (A Memoir) by John Irving. It so far is mostly about wrestling, which isn't that interesting. However, I have been turned on to his other books, and will tackle those eventually, like Cider House Rules and The World According to Garp, both of these would make good 'Books to Movies' reviews. He seems like a decent writer. Overcast today, I guess it doesn't really matter.

I drew a fairly accurate drawing of the Citadel from Null after thinking about it for awhile. Not exactly art, but helps me visualize the story and may help a real artist draw it someday.

LUNCH: CK strip with Hotdog Roll, wh rice, beans, lettuce, bread pudding. Ate ck strip w/roll, and a little of all the rest. 2 ck strips in reserve.

Pretty quiet morning and afternoon compared to the wk-end and yesterday. May take another shot at the Lessig email. Something short but effective. Maybe a watered down version of the King email.

SUPPER: Beef/Bean, maybe turkey wraps, wh rice, it’s our payback for the Hunger Strike. That ought to teach ya."

Notes for Day 98 (Four Years Later)

  • The Lost Citadel: Looking back, the most frustrating thing about this entry is knowing I drew that "fairly accurate" sketch of the Citadel and currently can't find it. The Citadel is the heart of the Null story, and I really want to find it so I can have AI render a high-fidelity version of it. It’s buried somewhere in the boxes of legal and writing paperwork, waiting to be rediscovered.

  • Prison Gambling: My interaction with A.K. about the bet shows the small, psychological games we played to stay sane. Betting on when we’d get our privileges back (and then arguing over the "stakes" after the fact) was a way to exert control over a situation where we had none.

  • The John Irving Pivot: Even though his wrestling memoir wasn't my thing, it sparked the idea for a "Books to Movies" review project. It’s another example of how I was constantly looking for ways to keep my filmmaker brain active, even when restricted to the unit.

  • The "Payback" Menu: The "Beef/Bean" wraps for supper were clearly viewed as punishment by the inmates—a literal "bad taste" left in our mouths as the final word on the hunger strike.

  • Transitioning to Real Advocacy: Despite the quiet day, I was still refining my outreach to Professor Lessig. I was learning that "short but effective" was a better strategy for high-level legal advocacy than long-winded rants.
