Day 81: Two strikes and you're In! After failing at Dream Control and losing my work backups, I finally scored a win: acceptance into the Camp community with a simple softball game.

Journal Entry:

Woke at 1 AM and tried to record the dream I was having. Here’s the results (see above), re-woke at 7:00 AM. H/L/R drink, hold off on meds till later.

20 years since 9/11, unbelievable, really.

In the Library: Journal, Barbell, then who knows? There is a world of choices, but only a few here at the Devens Federal Country Club Camp. But opportunity exists when you make it. I’ve decided to write my backups on email and send them home that way. At least try. See how much money I save; by the time you add typewriter ribbon, copying, and postage, it won’t be much more and will be better at the end, as I’ll have easier access. Some limitations. I’ll try it. Man, 8:30 and I’m tired already. I need coffee.

BRUNCH: Scrambled eggs, hash browns, wraps, shredded cheese.

Did a couple of pages of Barbell. Might work, not sure. Got a haircut. Read a lot of Frankenstein. This would make a great streaming series.

SUPPER: Chili (too many onions), white rice, creamed corn.

Read more on the book. Then I kept score at the first Camp Devens Softball Game—well, the first one since COVID hit. A kid named T.T. (he looks like a kid, but he might be as old as me) asked me to do it. I did it because I like his enthusiasm for putting the whole thing together. It was fun, and I think people enjoyed it. Most of the camp was out there. Pretty cool. The only slightly negative thing was that I posted the score, the winning circled, in the common area. ‘E’ said I was grimey to do that. I said, “What do you care? You didn’t even play. I was the unbiased scorekeeper; I didn’t have a dog in the fight.” Sometimes I wonder about that boy.

‘You’re in my Seat’ – Meet the Fockers (Boo!) and The Dilemma with Vince Vaughn and Kevin James. You would think with these two it would have been funnier. Kind of a one-joke movie, and that joke wasn't funny.

Notes for Day 81 (Four Years Later)

As a writer, dreams are super important to me. Even more so during my incarcerated time. All of my life, I have cherished even nightmares, because sometimes, while very rare, I use the content of the dreams as inspiration to write a story or scene. If I go to sleep thinking about a story or storyline I am working on, sometimes I will dream of the next scene. Basically, writing the story in my sleep, especially my project, Null, which was born out of this case as my way to escape the reality of federal prosecution and actually helped me fall asleep. Think of it as a writer's way of counting sheep.

For years, Null only existed in my head, but since I continued this practice of dream control in prison, I decided to start writing it down, if only in Notes form. I may never do anything with it, but it has been a good way for me to escape from reality. Maybe someone will feel the same someday. So I keep working on it. This entry showed my failed attempt to write down what happened in my dream. I thought it was important to document, but my eyes were so “hung over” from the new medicine that the notes are unreadable. Sigh.

Speaking of failures, I also started trying to send home everything I worked on—mostly the stories, but also these Journals and Legal Work. Even though I sent them to three different emails, none of them were there when I got home. Because of the Corralinks system, the people on the other end have to save them to their own email accounts or devices. Nobody ever did. Important lesson: If you go to prison and want what you create saved, make sure the person(s) on the other side have some sort of tech savvy enough to do this. Luckily, I sent hard copies home as well, so I was able to save most everything.

The final thing was the Softball game. It was quite fun and really made the camp feel like a community. Even though I could have actually played, I decided to just keep score, and because of it, I talked to some of the other inmates whom I probably never would have talked to. I was honored to keep score, do a good job, and be involved with my new community.
