Day 45: My Introduction to the Whitey Bulger Factory or "The Complications of Being a Rat"
Day 45: My Introduction to the Whitey Bulger Factory or "The Complications of Being a Rat"

Journal Entry:

“Slept off and on, and didn’t wake until 6:20. Late for me. Had breakfast; the cinnamon rolls were a bust—it was today’s biggest kitchen gripe.

BREAKFAST: Rock Hard Cereal (Another complaint, but that’s’ everyday), something-like a cinnamon bun. Apple.

Going to do what I can by 11:00 when I report for duty.

LUNCH: Crazy, I ate lunch on Fish Friday. I went with the hummus, which I never had before. Made out of beans or some crap. It was actually spicy and good. Ate it and took some chips (the same outdated Syracuse-flavored ones from the SHU).

Bit of a scene at lunch, which continued throughout the day. Someone, M.B., who, again, allegedly has behavior resembling a rodent-type animal, complained to the CO (or maybe it was the Counselor) about the tiny amount of soup he was being served. Very loudly, and adding ‘Everyday.’ They gave him more soup, but then as a bonus later in the day, someone threw water on his bed. Because of this, a mandatory inmate meeting was held in the dining hall. (I missed it because I slept through the announcement or didn’t hear it because of the enormous fan over my CubiCell. Apparently, it was less than mandatory, because nobody noticed I wasn’t there.) I guess there were a lot of threats of group punishment [loss of TVs, phones, email, etc.] if the general camp population didn’t leave their favorite inmate (or one of them) alone. Even the tiny Case Manager got into the yelling. Damn, sorry I missed it. The whole thing has me wondering about reality vs. perception as it pertains to prison life.

SUPPER: Chicken chunks, made a leftover hotdog roll chicken sandwich.

Went outside. Did two laps and hung out till 7. Went back before turning into a pumpkin. Later at night, I ate chips and a leftover hotdog. Not sure why, I ate all my reserve food I keep stockpiled for when I skip a meal. Stop that sh*t. Anyway.”

Notes for Day 45 (Four Years Later)

A pretty standard incarcerated day. The drama involving the alleged Camp Rat really got me thinking about informants and the system that not only encourages but thrives on ‘those who rat.’ I started writing in my head an in-depth study of ‘confidential informants’ disguised as a short story or novella. I called it, “The Complications of Being a Rat.” I only made rough notes, and someday, I plan on totally diving into it. I believe one hundred percent that the Criminal Justice system has evolved (or devolved) into nothing but a Whitey Bulger factory, building, fine-tuning, and polishing amateur criminals into well-oiled, highly efficient smooth criminals who not only know how to commit better and bigger crimes but also know how to play the system so that when they are finally caught, they do the minimal amount of prison time or sometimes (like Johnny Pockets) no time at all.
