Journal Entry:
“Up around 5 AM. Count went by. I had a hot LHR drink by 5:30, so I’d be primed for breakfast. Read Frankenstein till the lights in the camp came on.
BREAKFAST: Cereal (ate ½), Blueberry cake (two bites), took an apple. We had a new cook, LN, because the main cook was hauled away to parts unknown. Probably the SHU, at first.
Watched R.Y. leave for R & D and then freedom as I left breakfast. ‘So long.’ I like R.Y.; he was funny with no mercy, slammed everyone. Plus, he had good taste in books. Most of the good ones he donated to the library. It’ll be a little more boring (if that’s possible) without him. Going to work on Walking Distance or D/OJ, this journal, and get ready to go outside to do laps (wrote ‘Wraps’ first, what the f*ck was I thinking about?). I said no more napping, but I laid back down from 7-8 AM. Scored another book from the library, by the guy who wrote The Big Short. It’s called Flash Boys. I'll start that one after Frankenstein 1.
LUNCH: Spaghetti with Onion-enriched sauce, Chicken Parmesan, spinach, a brownie (quite delicious; I ate some, will regret it down the road, no doubt), and a roll (which I put in reserve).
SUPPER: Steakish pieces, potato, gravy. Ate it all. Walked outside, two laps; better than nothing.”
Notes for Day 42 (Four Years Later)
What a dull day. I’d like to say it was rare, but I’d be lying. Of course, this was before my job, dog training, and I got into my writing pattern and legal work. But still, if actual Hell is as they say, made up of a repetitious, tedious, boring existence, I have indeed had a taste of Hell on Earth.
A couple of things are worth talking about: The Cook who was removed and we never saw again was the same one who provided me with the Cayenne Pepper. I knew that it ‘might’ have been against the rules to accept the ‘gift,’ but that ‘might’ wasn’t verified until much later. And I had already seen a lot of stuff come out of the kitchen. I know that doesn’t make it right. But anyway, on the scale of rule-breaking, it was a very minor infraction. He wasn’t hauled out for that but for something that happened at another prison/jail. I never got the details, but we were told it was something VERY BAD. Who knows?
LN becoming the cook, even though I was still new there, I was well aware of how universally hated LN was among the rest of the camp. Him becoming the lead cook was just some of the consternation that was coming in the weeks/months ahead. I didn’t really mind him. He talked a lot, but as I have said, prison, even if it is like Hell, is really an opportunity to practice tolerance. And I love seeing opportunities where others see problems or despair.
