Actual Journal Entry:

“Slept medium; got to start living inside my head more with stories, ideas, business, journal, instead of the other thing, and definitely not the Old World. Though I don’t dwell on it too much here at camp like I did at the SHU. Had my first Honey/Lemon drink in about thirty-nine days. It was awesome. No cayenne pepper, but I did score a little hot sauce. Meh, it was okay, but I really need the powder.

BREAKFAST: I ate it because it’s Fish Friday. I’m probably skipping lunch. Some cereal, lemon square, took an apple.

Scored the final LHR ingredient (no comment), so I had another one to celebrate. Funny how everyday Old World things become a big deal here in This World. Went outside after lunch (which, as predicted, I skipped), chilled out. It’s a beautiful day.

Did three laps with E. (first time for three; tomorrow, four). If I accomplish five laps, I’ll be ready to go home. Maybe I should draft a memo to the Warden about how close I am. Lol. Found out Black Widow was the big movie last night in the TV room. That was according to RY. Crazy. My pirate radar just went up, but here in prison? This requires further investigation.”

Notes for Day 38 (Four Years Later)

Two things are going on in this entry. My LHR drink is something I did and still do every morning: hot water mixed with honey, lemon, and cayenne. You’re supposed to do it religiously and not eat anything for one hour after. So I usually drink it every day. While there’s no medical or scientific proof that I’ve seen, it does help me, at least, with digestion, and I just feel better doing it than skipping it. Honey and lemon juice are easily purchased from the commissary. The cayenne pepper was a little harder to come by. Occasionally, we could get hot sauce that had a bit of cayenne. But I have hotter tastes, so I “acquired” some red pepper from the kitchen. While technically breaking the rules, I traded something for it with someone who worked in the kitchen, and in turn, they could take whatever they wanted from the kitchen, or so they told me. I figured I was in the clear. Since I was never "caught" during my incarceration, I guess that legal theory was never tested.

The other thing cuts even closer to home. Black Widow was a superhero movie released in theaters and on paid downloads on July 9, 2021. So how were the inmates watching this movie in the TV room by July 30, 2021? The obvious answer: they brought in some kind of digital bootleg. This really boggled my mind. Here I am, serving a five-year sentence for what I considered to be the Fair Use of Orphan Works, which were basically made up of old TV movies that were given away free in the 1970s and 1980s and never released on any video format. And actual new movie piracy was happening right here in jail. Ugh, I really had trouble wrapping my head around the irony and ridiculousness of this situation. As the years went by, I came to realize that new movie piracy was as rampant in prison as drugs, cell phones, alcohol, take-out food (sometimes huge feasts), and prostitution. What was I even doing here? I wish I could ever figure out an answer to that question. Maybe someday…
