Actual Journal Entry:
“Went to bed, or should I say went to sleep, later. We all ‘go to bed’ at the same time every night—10 PM, lights off. Though there is an awful lot of activity sometimes late at night. But that’s none of my business. Thankfully, I have the fans and their sweet white noise.
BREAKFAST: Actually ate breakfast today. Once in a while isn’t bad. Oatmeal, cinnamon roll, bananas.
Worked on Null, this journal & possible stuff for PDFU.
BRUNCH: Scrambled eggs, potato wedges, biscuit with gravy. Orange. Ate all. Took an Orange.
Talked to one of the dog trainers about his case. (Most people here like to.) His initials were E-D. He had a tough time in the system. His case originated out of Miami, and they wouldn’t allow him to self-surrender, which was strange for white-collar crime. The BOP transferred him several times before landing here at the camp. Once, he was even in with a killer.
Rainy day, but was able to squeeze in two laps, which is an increase. Lol. Five laps is a mile; going to build up to this slowly as my leg feels better. Went out a second time at 4:15 PM and was sent back in by a CO PeterSomething, I think. He said recreation doesn’t start till 4:30 PM—news to me. The learning never stops here. The Catholic pastor was here to give a service at the trailer. He had a small audience.
SUPPER: Chicken/Onion Fried Rice with mostly Onions. Picked at it. Ate the carrots, saved the bread for a peanut butter sandwich later tonight.
Finished the MASH book, started If It Bleeds… by S. King. Fell asleep after a fashion.”
Notes for Day 33 (Four Years Later)
A standard day, starting to get into the groove. E-D and I would become pretty good friends. Smart guy, with a really messed-up case. The more I learned about it, the more familiar the prosecuting techniques sounded. One major difference: he worked for a big corporation and was basically a scapegoat. But I don’t want to go into it much here because I don’t know the status of his appeals.
CO PeterSomething was pretty much the most hated guard at Camp. He did tons of ‘Random’ CubiCell searches, always doing parameter walks looking for contraband. Once, we had a lockdown because he found an old flip-phone buried in the dirt, right before the Super Bowl—sht like that. He didn’t bother me much, though I think there was one other incident when I started training dogs, but it was such a small thing I don’t remember. He was basically being a dck. I think he was stuck on ‘being a d*ck’ mode. He either hated his job or loved it a little too much.
I’m a huge Stephen King fan; I’ve read most of his books, and right before I went in, I read The Mr. Mercedes Trilogy, which was an okay series. Except it has one of King’s best characters he has ever created: Holly Gibney. Such a great, real character. I share Mr. King’s (and many of his readers’) affection for this fictional person. And I completely agree with his statement when he said, "I love Holly. I wish she was a real person." That was so weird when he said that. I had been thinking that very same thought, but I didn’t say it out loud. So, it made perfect sense that when I got to the Camp and into the Library, there were The Outsider (Holly is a supporting character) and If It Bleeds…, a book of short stories that features a Holly-centric one. I hid them in my CubiCell so that when I found time, I could hang out with this fictional person whom I wished I knew in real life.
