Actual Journal Entry:
“My first weekend at Camp! Learned the TV audio is accessible through the radios/headsets and don’t take others’ seats in the TV room. I guess I already knew that last one; still learning valuable stuff. Visiting starts at 8 AM on Fridays & Saturdays. Use the back door for recreation during visiting hours, and you don’t have to wear the prison uniforms on weekends. All super helpful stuff. Slept excellent again. Must try to get a beard trim today—still wearing the SHU beard. BP was high last night according to the prison nurse, but if I remember correctly, not compared to the last six years. Worked on Walking Distance; may again today. The story is starting to flow finally. No longer scared of the emotions it caused me.
BRUNCH: Scrambled Eggs, pancakes/syrup, potato corners. I ate it all.
RO is the Barber here, or a barber here. Took some work to get that out of E. (Like it was a secret or something.) So RO trimmed my beard and gave me a short haircut, but he acted like he did it as a favor to E. He didn’t seem like he enjoyed it. (Who would?) I learned a little more today, like most days here. Slept a lot. Finished reading The Outsider, started MASH book (Original), Firefly: The Big Damn Hero is my library book.
SUPPER: Chicken pieces in veggies (onion & green pepper), picked out the chicken, mashed potatoes with some sort of BBQ(?) Sauce. Beans. Ate most of it.”
Notes for Day 32 (Four Years Later)
Another short entry, mainly because I was learning every aspect of Camp/Prison life.
After I got to know RO, I realized he always acted like that—basically like he didn’t like you. But we actually got along well throughout our incarcerated time. He had been in for a long time, but unlike ‘E’, it was more of an "in-and-out" situation: three years, four years, five years. You get the idea. Still a long time, even when it’s in pieces like that. Also, there were several former lawyers there whom, after a fashion, I was hanging around, learning things (lots of things) from. Eventually, because of my writing habits, I started writing up motions for people. RO was one of the people our little group effort got released early. That was one of my greatest feelings of accomplishment. Because it didn’t end with him. And once it started, I really began to enjoy it. I wouldn’t say I learned enough to qualify as a ‘Jailhouse lawyer,’ but I did learn enough to maybe someday play one on TV.
