Trading claustrophobia for a new chapter: Goodbye, SHU! Hello, Club Fed... or as I'd come to know it, Camp Devens.
Trading claustrophobia for a new chapter: Goodbye, SHU! Hello, Club Fed... or as I'd come to know it, Camp Devens.

Actual Journal Entry:

“Good night’s sleep; took a while to get to sleep, but slept all the way through, nearly. Found a PBS radio station out of Boston—that’s cool. I just wished they said the time more. Must write a letter to Cousin S. about Uncle Bill, next. Nearly thirty days in, feeling pretty good about ‘this world’—the opportunities, potential, time management. Looking forward to it.

BREAKFAST: Standard. Ate the cereal, just in case today is the day.

And it was! After all that drama about how I got up to the penthouse cell, they had me hop down the stairs again. Got my leg, but it wasn’t charged* and they ‘perp walked’ us from the SHU to R&D for transfer. It was a little tough, but I made it. ‘E’ and another inmate exited with me. His name here will be RO, and I could tell he didn’t like me right away. Or he just always looked angry. RO and E knew each other from other places, I think even the street. But to his credit, ‘E’ vouched for me, called me his buddy, much to RO’s surprise. ‘E’ also started in right away on how I got him brought back to the SHU, which was true. But he didn’t just tell RO; he told EVERYBODY. The camp is a world of difference. Unbelievable. This ends ‘Tales from the SHU,’ but this entry will be continued in the sequel, Prison Journal #2 - My Summer at Camp Devens.”

Notes for Day 28 (Four Years Later)

Yup, today was the day. Because the transfer was extremely rushed, rough, and super aggressive (to me, anyway—this was my 'first time'), I didn’t record much until I got settled in the Camp. At that point, ‘E’ gave me a regular notebook, which he had in his stuff from the other prisons. He had a lot of stuff, as recorded in the continuation of the day.

One more thing: I don’t think I mentioned it before, but my artificial leg is a C-leg, which means it has a computerized knee. It has to charge with a special cord, much like regular phones or other electronics. I was surprised how taken aback the guards were by it. It’s not exactly new; I’d had one for more than a decade. So, besides having a potential weapon with a sharp, claw-like hook on the end (the foot), I also had a six-foot cord that could be a weapon or a way to hang oneself. Therefore, I understood why they didn’t allow it in the SHU. In fact, my leg would cause quite a bit of an issue throughout my entire incarceration 'career.' More on Day 28, Part 2.
