Pre-Entry Notes:
So, besides “Game Time,” there was another interesting guard in the SHU. While I never learned “Game Time’s” real name, I did learn this other CO’s name because he ended up working at the Camp occasionally. He doesn’t look like a CO, and that’s all I’m going to say about that. He does have quite a temper and a very fiery personality (and that's close to his real name). For this journal, I’m going to call him “CF,” and you are about to meet him in the next entry.
Actual Journal Entry:
“Interesting start to my day. But first, the Sleep Report: Less than last night. I remember being up at 1:30 AM; they checked my temperature around 2:30 AM, and I awakened at the regular time of 5 to 6 AM. Not cool. This is like being back in the hospital. Must be the meds. I will take them earlier today, around brunch time, and take fewer naps.
The Legacy of COVID: Around 8 AM, the CO I call “CF”’s face appears in my cell door window. CF: ‘What the FCK are you doing in here?!?’ For a second, I thought I was in trouble. ME: ‘Um, my test—you know my COVID test’ (made pokey gestures up my nose) ‘came back Undetermined. Neither Positive nor Negative.’ CF: ‘So?! You were supposed to go to the camp.’ He talked like he was in charge of the SHU. Of course, they all do. (Much later, I found out he was.) ME: ‘I know. They put me in here and brought my old cellie back from the camp and put him in our old cell.’ CF: ‘For Fcks Sake!’ I just shrugged. ‘Okay, Man, I’m just getting back from my weekend. I’ll make a few calls and find out what the F*CK is going on.’ ME: ‘I’m fine in here, really.’ (Visions of me being put back with Screamers/Bangers motivated me to say that.) CF gives me the thumbs-up through the SHU door window.
Story of my life. Nothing ever goes smoothly for me. I usually just roll with it. I can even f*ck up prison life less than twenty days in, without even trying! I’m not being negative, just realistic. Oh, well, it makes for an interesting Journal Entry. I wonder what the rest of the day will bring. STAY TUNED.
Okay, nothing else happened after that interesting start. Of course, it is Sunday. Monday might be different. Wrote a lot again on NULL, this rewrite, and tossed around a few new ideas to pursue next. Still tossing around one I came up with that is a lot like ICE and is really complex. Don’t know if I want to tackle it in here. We’ll see. Back to the drawing board, maybe. How about a bunch of short stories when I finish Visiting Hours, if I finish VH?
BRUNCH: Was kind of good. Biscuits with Gravy (which I don’t think I ever had the breakfast version before), Scrambled Eggs, Hash Browns. I ate it all. Three good meals in a row! The SHU law of averages says tonight’s supper will be extra nasty. This time I am being negative; let’s wait and see. I’ve got to cut that sht out; they used to call me Mr. Brightside. Well, MyH called me that. I am tired. One of my fcked-up thought-rants today was trying to figure out where H. and I saw The Killers in Concert. I know the White Stripes was in Atlantic City, and the Flaming Lips was in Florida. But where did we see The Killers? I remember the concert, just not where it was. The stupid sh*t my mind dwells on. Actually, that’s one of the milder ones. I’ll keep the others in the mental Journal and would expunge them from there if I could. Hopefully, a good night’s sleep is on tap. This afternoon is dragging along. Tired, written-out, sick of the books, workout done, awaiting supper, then shower. Maybe the reverse on those last two. Not very exciting. Okay, as I said, I had an idea similar to ICE that I don’t think I’ll tackle here during my forced vacation. First, I’m just going to jot down some of my thoughts in case I want to use it at a later date.
Book Idea: “Walcott Global Investigations” (not the actual title, my reference only). So, there is this guy, a private investigator who takes on really big cases and hidden cases. Many irons in the fire. He likes the chaos. He acts like he has this really big international investigation firm, but it’s just him. He uses technology and other people (without their knowledge) to pull off the illusion. He lives nowhere and doesn’t have an office, let alone the one portrayed in his ads. He lives in hotels where the current case is. He employs or dupes a number of conmen, hackers, and law enforcement for his schemes. He has an alternative reason for every case he takes. Usually, it’s to get someone involved in the case that was or may have been responsible for framing him years ago, when he was an officer for LAPD. Whoever did it killed his wife, stole a sh*tload of drug money from the police evidence locker. So, they wanted him gone—the police, the government, the cartel. So he ran before he was arraigned. He is now hiding in plain sight, under a different identity, using every resource available to try and prove his innocence and get revenge. (Slowly reveal this.) He’s kind of a con-man/PI, think Rockford Files on steroids. First book is a murder mystery on the coast of Maine. I don’t know, needs some work, some development, and a lot more work. I like it better seeing it written down.
Wahoo! My first three-pager! Well, more than two, anyway. Barely. Man, I’m tired. Everything is either impressive or depressing me. See what I mean?
SUPPER: Roast Beef, Peas, mashed potatoes with Gravy and a Biscuit. Looks like the same Biscuits from Brunch. I devoured it all. Wow! Four in a row! A SHU record! For me, anyway!
I’ve become way more food focused here, and I still think I’m losing weight. I guess the on-line reviews were right: they do have a thinner, healthier you in mind with meals. Cheap too! $$$ Protect the bottom line.
Day 19 has come and gone. Going to read until sleep; see what tomorrow brings. Signing off from the SHU.”
Notes for Day 19 (Four Years Later)
Whew! Long entry. It started strong with the wake-up call from “CF.” As mentioned, I had a few more interactions with him, and indeed, he was in charge of the SHU. Unfortunately, I paid several more visits to the SHU during my time at Devens, but those are stories for another day. Similar to “Game Time,” “CF” acted like he didn’t give two f*cks about you, but obviously, he did. One thing that was apparent here was his belief that only the hardened "problem kids" should be in the SHU, definitely not "campers." But COVID-19 really turned the world upside down, and this government-dysfunctional quasi-agency was no exception. Enough on that.
The other thing I want to talk about is the untitled Book Idea at the end of the entry. Reading it again now, I realize that was more a revenge fantasy than an actual idea for a book. I mean, I never claimed to be “framed,” but as many legal scholars have told me after reading the details of my prosecution, "This is a BULLSH*T Case."
And I’m sure I will be talking about this more in the days, weeks, and years to come, as I am writing a book on the whole situation, including my beliefs/interpretations of Copyright Law, the things in my case that don’t make any sense, etc. I am still filing FOIA and FOAA requests with law enforcement and will not stop until I get real responses. One thing I do have is plenty of time.
