Self-medicating in the SHU; You do what you have to Do...
Self-medicating in the SHU; You do what you have to Do...

Actual Journal Entry:

“Slept very little. WTF is going on with my meds? Or is it all the sleeping during the day? Today is going to be an experiment with the meds, and I’ll try not to sleep in the daytime. One thing I noticed is the journal entries are increasing. Plenty o’ time to write.

IDEA: Design new web layouts for WIT and PDFU on paper (W-Seasonal, P-Holidays). No Grand Juries in Maine. I bet that’s what they are waiting for—to bring more charges to JP. I wonder if they are back in business with the Civil State of Emergency lifted. Hmmm…

French Toast, tater tots, and two hardboiled eggs made for another fine Jailhouse breakfast. Except cracking the eggs made me think of P-bird and the Puppies. Enough of that. There’s no crying in Baseball. Chicken and rice/coleslaw with no slaw combo. Got to stop eating so much—too much bread, chips, and other crap from the commissary. I’m supposed to continue to lose weight here and get into better shape, not gain and get flabby. Eat the minimum from the meals you get; that’s it.

Tomorrow is 14 days for me. Wonder if anything will happen. Got to wrack my brain on how to shorten this thing. It’s not that bad here. Just boring as AF, and I want to get on with my life.”

Notes for Day 13 (Four Years Later)

This was a kind of short entry after the holiday one the previous day. The "experiment" I was hinting at was this: my first (and I think only) time I truly broke prison rules. Here's how it went down:

Because the medical staff never quite got my meds right in the SHU—sleep medicine in the morning and Wellbutrin at night—and they basically gave you your medicine through the meal tray slot in the door at the time they wanted you to take it, I had to adapt. Some nurses would make you show that you swallowed the meds by opening your mouth (due to rampant drug abuse in prison), but since I had contracted COVID a few months before, I had developed a lump in my throat that basically never went away. It was annoyingly sore, and swallowing some foods was difficult; it's something that still persists to this day. But when they started screwing up the timing of my meds and checking my mouth, I realized something: I could partially swallow the pill and then regurgitate it back up (like a bird). Gross, I know, but this new "ability" came in very handy in managing my own medicine. Obviously, I didn't document it in my actual journal because it was technically breaking the rules.

Given the proximity of our SHU cell, it didn’t take long for ‘E’ to notice what I was doing, and he quickly pointed it out, making a big deal of it.

"So you do break the rules! You are still a criminal!" At first, I thought he was serious, but as I got to know him better, I realized he was just screwing with me.
