Day 100: Last of Prison Journal 2, brings more dog handler training and observations made of the new arrivals. I'm getting used to this place and that's scary!

Journal Entry:

"Up around 6:30, H/L Drink. Might have to dive into some coffee before the bare minimum hour (You are supposed to wait for at least an hour after HL drink for full benefit) cause it’s dog handler day! Must study up on the commands. A little, I haven’t even done my practice.

Day 100, last day of J. and last day of Sept. Something good gotta start happening or I gotta make it happen soon! Get creative! Be smart and Bold.

LUNCH: Bone-in CK (2, stripped one for reserve), beets (wolfed those down), some gross pudding (tapioca? Passed). Mix them up, mashed potato, gravy, Chef Salad, maybe I’m losing my mind or at least my memory.

No town hall yet and no returns to normalcy, the library appears to be open, hard to say. Total lack of info, big surprise. Read more of Terminal Man, interesting especially since it was written in 1972. Must see the movie for Books v. Movie, if there is one, and for the Crichton books which there have been 13, and maybe... I’ll take it if I ever make the pirate one (LOL).

I’ll finish it when I get home. I think it would be a great movie, great characters. I went into the computer room, 10 msgs. in last 7 days, interesting... no email access tho, however, I can get into the law library. So... this week-end or maybe tomorrow...

3 new campers today, haven't talk to any of them. One guy who weirdly looks like a smaller version of my dad, was quite knowledgeable about old country music. I heard him going on about it at the supper with Bill and Harry. The other guy, a guy from Pakistan has been drafted into A.K.’s disciples, which will last about 2 hours according to J.K.. Don't know much about the third guy, he sat at the Spanish table.

I wonder if we’ll lose people tomorrow. I hope the guy who no longer talks to me doesn't go... could really fuck up his plans if he's put back in the SHU. Anyway, none of my business. END: Second Prison Journal."

Notes for Day 100 (Four Years Later)

  • The Crichton Connection: I have always been a huge fan of Michael Crichton’s writing and films. Right before I surrendered, I read Pirate Latitudes, which was published posthumously. Even then, and especially now, I fantasized about making a movie based on it. It has great characters and a cinematic feel, but I should probably finish this real-life "Pirate" case before I hit the celluloid high seas.

  • 100 Days Down: Reaching 100 days was a major internal shift. I was looking at the math: 100 down, and roughly 1,000 more to go. The "burning unease" had evolved into a mantra: Get creative! Be smart and Bold!

  • The Dog Handler Discipline: Despite the milestone, the daily grind of the dog program remained. I was feeling the pressure to memorize the commands, realizing that this program was one of the few things keeping my mind sharp and disciplined.

  • The "New Camper" Observations: Prison is a revolving door of characters. Seeing a guy who looked like a "smaller version of my dad" or watching A.K. "draft" new disciples provided the human theater that kept me observant as a filmmaker, even when the facility was still in a post-shakedown "cold war".
