Original Entry: Friday, 10/08/21
Morning: Slept pretty good. Dreamed, no recall. Up at 7:00, HLR drink, meds, in Library. Gonna work on J., some story, legal stuff.
The Conversation: Talked to Park, first about the Varsity Blues scandal, then about his business and case. Learned a lot and a little about Lee Academy. Need to research this: Who owns LA school?
Lunch: Famous Fish Friday (baked or fried). I took the beans, ate very little. White rice (ate some, birds got the rest), Peas (ate all), Orange, Roll (reserve), Cole slaw (ate all).
Afternoon: In library now, gonna try to write some, then Law Library, then outside and read in the shade. Fantastic outside.
Supper: CK Fajita, creamed corn, beans, white rice, wraps. Bunch of CK and wraps (in reserve).
Evening: Went outside, till turkeys flew into the trees. So Cool.
Media: You’re in My Seat, Edge of Tomorrow, Casino Royale, Equalizer 2.
Four Years Later: The Retrospective
Looking back, this was a "standard" day on the surface, but the subtext was shifting. At this point, I was talking a big game about legal motions and FOIAs, but I was still a rookie. I wouldn't actually start filing for another 10 days. My first attempt was a disaster—aimed at the wrong office and filed outside the legal framework. In that world, if you don't follow the "allowed" directions to the letter, they don't just correct you; they toss your work in the trash.
While I waited for my "motion era" to begin, the only thing of real importance was my conversation with K.P. He was in on a fraud charge involving private schools. Growing up near a private academy myself, I was hooked.
I realized then that I was getting a real-world education while incarcerated. Between hearing the details of cases like K.P.'s and observing the inmates' circumstances, I learned more about how the world actually functions—and how the law is actually applied—than I ever did in a traditional school. Prison was an incredible, albeit brutal, learning experience that the "free" world could never replicate.
