On Day 51, the mundane detail of extra chicken on my tray is overshadowed by a chilling education in prison censorship.

Journal Entry:

“The medical adjustment worked. I fell asleep way early, though I was wide awake at 3:30 AM. HLR drink and adjusted dose of daytime meds, then chilled till 7 AM. Skipped breakfast. Nine days till I start seriously pushing to get out of here early, etc. In the meantime, I’ll learn all I can about the appeal system, etc. In the library (sob, the word ‘library’ barely fits since yesterday) now, working on this journal and then Outer Justice. When I get a good opening for Walking Distance, I’ll do the final tweak to WD and then start the second draft.

Wahoo! Commissary Day! Supposed to be another hot one.

LUNCH: Was Bone-In Chicken, green beans, chips. Got extra Chicken, so I put that in reserve with bread & chips.

Worked my lunch gig. The lights in the dorm were still off, so I just read my book and chilled. Super f*cking hot, too hot to do anything in the library. Just chilled and took naps. J.K. is going to take Saturdays off, and I am going to take off Sundays. Should be a breeze; we’ll see.

Got most of my commissary, except for pepperoni, again.

SUPPER: Steak-in-cheese in a hot dog roll, brownie maybe. Took some of the steak for tomorrow, because Fish Friday is on tap.

Went outside as it started to cool down slightly. Now in the library, but not sure how long I’ll spend; still roasting in here. Too hot. Went back to my CubiCell, read Trejo. I’m in his movie-making era now. But every once in a while, he delves back into his prison/crime days. This entire book would make a really good movie. I’m sure someone has already jumped on the rights. I would, if it was possible...”

Notes for Day 51 (Four Years Later)

This entry, mostly about books, is appropriate since prison is largely centered around books, reading, and learning—even if it’s learning to move past the mistakes of one’s past and trying to become a better person.

The regular ‘purges’ of the library were really starting to get to me at this point. Eventually, I learned that one of the ‘educators’ was a big proponent of security in the prisons, and since inmates typically hid contraband and stuff in the books, that was the justification for destroying learning tools and literature. While on a logical level I can understand it, if anyone in power—anywhere, not only in the world of incarceration—starts censoring or destroying books for their own justified reasons, we as a civilized society will be in serious danger of extinction.
